Painting to learn.
I love stuff.
For years, I haunted flea markets and auctions. I didn't buy all that much, but I gave myself a great education in material culture and what things may mean to us.
Naturally, I turned to still life when I began to paint. Sometimes I am going for a portrait likeness of an object. Other times, it's in a painting for its color or shape. I want to stop time, or pause it. By doing that, I hope the viewer will look at an overlooked thing and consider it.
So I'm painting to learn. About stuff. About the world. About painting. About me. And definitely about you!
“Try to be one of those people on whom nothing is lost,” Henry James recommended. Painting helps me become one of those people.
